About this Extract Images workflow

What it does

Extract raster images from a PDF at their native pixel resolution when possible, or draw a box around page content and save a high-resolution crop. Everything runs locally in your browser.

Processing model

This focused tool processes the selected document in your browser. The source file is not overwritten.

Good practice

Keep the original file and inspect the downloaded result before replacing an archival, signed, submitted or legally important copy.

How Extract Images works in FileCarpenter

Extract raster images from a PDF at their native pixel resolution when possible, or draw a box around page content and save a high-resolution crop. Everything runs locally in your browser.

The focused PDF Tools workspace is designed for a single job at a time. It does not require an account and does not add a FileCarpenter watermark to the downloaded result.

Good to know

Does this preserve the original image quality?

When FileCarpenter can identify a standalone embedded raster image, it exports the decoded image at its native pixel dimensions as a lossless PNG. No screenshot scaling is applied.

What happens when I draw a box?

The tool checks for embedded raster images inside your box. If the box corresponds to one recoverable image, that native image is exported. Otherwise FileCarpenter renders only the selected region at high resolution.

Why are some graphics not listed as images?

PDF pages can contain vector artwork, masks, tiled fragments, transparency groups, or drawings made from many objects. Those do not always exist as one standalone raster image, so use the box selection mode for them.

Can I reuse any image I extract?

The extraction tool itself does not grant rights to the PDF content. Only reuse an image when you own it, have permission, or otherwise have a lawful basis to do so.
