Direct browser transfer

Send files directly when the networks allow it.

FCShare prefers peer-to-peer WebRTC and reports the negotiated route. When direct connectivity fails, TURN can relay encrypted packets so the transfer still works.

    The short answer

“Direct” is a route, not a marketing promise

WebRTC tries to establish the best path between the two browsers. Local-network or direct internet routes are preferred, but NATs and corporate firewalls sometimes require TURN.

FCShare therefore does not claim every transfer is serverless or always direct. It does promise that the signalling/TURN infrastructure is not used as persistent file storage.

    How to do it

    Three steps, in the browser.

    1. 1

      Open a temporary room

Either device can create the QR code.

    2. 2

      Establish WebRTC

ICE selects local, direct or relayed connectivity.

    3. 3

      Transfer

The existing DataChannel flow-control engine moves the bytes.

    Best for

    • One-time browser transfer
    • Cross-platform handoff
    • Large files
    • Private live sessions

    What stays intact

    • WebRTC encryption
    • No FileCarpenter payload archive
    • Route indicator
    • Optional room password

    Know before sending

    • TURN may be required
    • No offline download link
    • Both devices stay connected
    • Network policy can still block WebRTC entirely

    What TURN does

TURN forwards encrypted WebRTC packets when the peers cannot reach each other directly. It is a relay, not a file library.

    What the signalling service does

It pairs the temporary room and relays SDP/ICE setup information.

    Questions people ask

Is every FCShare transfer direct P2P?

No. TURN relay fallback may be required.

Does a TURN relay see a stored file?

FCShare does not create a persistent downloadable copy on the relay.

Can I tell which path was used?

FCShare reports Local, Direct or Relayed when browser statistics expose the candidate pair.
